Mark,

Well....I can tell you haven't been reading up on this.

The ports don't change because it's a service or run as a app-mode server.
Unless you manually switch them they will always be the defaults.

Well, run it as a service unless you are going to call home and tell your
wife to start the app. And on the whole "fast user switching" you don't
"need" to run fast user switching with xp. I'd suggest turning it off. all
it does is reduce system performance. This is unless you have 16 kids and 3
wives and they are constantly logging in and out every few minutes and don't
want to lose their "Word" document when the next one logs in.

SERVICE = runs as a system service. automatically starts when your computer
starts. user's need to have administrator capabilities to turn it off.

APP Mode Server = the user starts and stops it at their own discretion.

Subject: Application vs. Server vs. Service

I am currently running VNC as an application and having difficulties because
I need to run my XPhome machines with fast switching, plus I would like to
log in remotely as either the "administrator" or limited account user,
depending upon what I need to do.

Would it be better to run VNC as either a "service" or as a "server". I see
that the application port is 5900[+display#] and the server port is
5800[+display#], but what is the service port? Also, for accessing via a
client/viewer, do I use the same viewer application to access the remote
machine regardless of whether VNS is being run there as an application,
server or service?

I guess basically what I am trying to understand is what are the major pros
and cons of each form.

TIA

Mark
