A number of things have been conflated in this discussion.  I doubt that
the vncpasswd program on Unix (the one used when the password is created)
uses getpasswd(), so why can't vncpasswd function as recommended by
Matthew (above)?  I think he's making good sense.  It wouldn't solve every
problem with the password system, but it would be a worthwhile improvement
that would not have any effect on any other part of the system.  Right?
