        I agree with you, Mike.  This has nothing to do with cross-platform 
compatibility.  And it's not contradictory to cross-platform compatibility either.  
IMHO, I would rather say this is just a matter of coding.  The win version was based 
on Unix version, so they probably tried to write similar functions for win version.
