Dave, If both PCs are behind an ADSL router that has a firewall, and if you don't open up the VNC ports in that firewall, then using VNC between the machines is not an issue, because no outside traffic can get to your server.
If you are careful never to open up the firewall to let VNC traffic in from the Internet then you don't even need a password to be enable at the VNC Server, either... Of course, if you might change the firewall settings and accidentally open things up then a password is a good precaution!
