Wez -- I finally got it straightened out. The key issue is where to specify the open port. I made the mistake of using the "Services" tab in the firewall configuration aplet. Once I realized that I should use the "Exceptions" tab, it worked great. I have both 5800 and 5900 enabled, and both the viewer and the java viewer work fine.
