That's the next step. I tried ethereal but a quick look didn't help. I was trying to find out if anything at all was sent when a key is pressed. But since there seems to be constant rfb traffic, it wasn't easy to tell if the keystrokes were generating anything more. My guess (since xev reports nothing) is that the Vaio (laptop) is simply not seeing the keystrokes.
