There is no .Xmodmap, and for this particular notebook, there are no
examples of a working server.

Ah, in re-reading my mail, I can see how my description could have been
misinterpreted.   I wrote...

What I meant to say is that when "A" alone is pressed, the server sees
no events, but if Ctrl-A is pressed, the server sees Ctrl-A.  (This
is the "a" keysym and XLookupString gives 1 bytes:  "")
