Mickey,

I understand the logistic problem and I don't have any real solution for
that unless... if you can connect to your work PC from your home PC using
Remote Desktop, you appear like you are at work but you are really there at
home where you can make changes to the firewall settings.

If you have a second PC at home (the old one?) maybe you can set up that RDP
connection - you can download the RDP client from the Microsoft website and
use it on a Win98/ME computer (I have done this); only the server has to be
XP Pro. Theoretically you could run it in one window (to control your PC at
work) and the VNC client in another window on the same computer (your PC at
home) but I have never tried this and there may be interference between the
two - maybe Wez has done it and he can offer advice.

Otherwise the only course I see is the painfully slow way of one change at a
time every time you come home from work (unless you use the shotgun
approach!).

Alan.

Quite honestly, I think so, but I'm not sure. The reason I'm not sure
is because very recently (last few weeks) I bought a new computer and
dumped the old one. It took me a little while to get the TM firewall
set up (yes, I know, it was a bit dangerous to be connected to the
Internet without any firewall...), and around the same time I also
installed TM, XP SP2 and VNC. I don't remember if I had VNC working
with TM but not XP SP2.

Ordinarily I would take a very methodical approach to troubleshooting
it, by removing and/or disabling each of the individual firewall pieces.
The problem, though, is that it's very difficult for me to test -
logistically. I connect from my PC at work to my PC at home, and I
can't walk my wife through disabling the pieces one by one. I have to
do that myself. If the problem were connecting to my work PC from home,
I could have her attempt to connect after each change made here. But
it's the other way, and I don't have any way to have anyone here at my
office, trying to connect to home, after I make each change.

Does anyone know which firewall should be safer - the TM firewall or XP
SP2 firewall?

Did the problem only occur since you installed SP2? If so, disable the
XP firewall and see if it works. That won't cure your problem but at
least you will be able to tell what is causing it.
