I've had a lot of minor connectivity issues with the XPSP2 firewall myself. At this point I would suggest working with the Trend firewall or another free one (such as the Kerio firewall). The new firewall appears to be very paranoid (generally a good thing) but does not appear to be consistent about notification.

Don't take this as a general opinion on the quality of the new version of the firewall; overall, it's behavior looks good for a tool designed to protect home users, and it does provide a fairly rich model for exceptions; I jsut haven't been able to work through getting it to behave the way I want.

Mickey,

I understand the logistic problem and I don't have any real solution for
that unless... if you can connect to your work PC from your home PC
using Remote Desktop, you appear like you are at work but you are
really there at home where you can make changes to the firewall
settings.

Quite honestly, I think so, but I'm not sure. The reason I'm not sure is because very recently (last few weeks) I bought a new computer and dumped the old one. It took me a little while to get the TM firewall set up (yes, I know, it was a bit dangerous to be connected to the Internet without any firewall...), and around the same time I also installed TM, XP SP2 and VNC. I don't remember if I had VNC working with TM but not XP SP2.

Ordinarily I would take a very methodical approach to troubleshooting
it, by removing and/or disabling each of the individual firewall pieces.
The problem, though, is that it's very difficult for me to test -
logistically. I connect from my PC at work to my PC at home, and I
can't walk my wife through disabling the pieces one by one. I have to
do that myself. If the problem were connecting to my work PC from home,
I could have her attempt to connect after each change made here. But
it's the other way, and I don't have any way to have anyone here at my
office, trying to connect to home, after I make each change.

Does anyone know which firewall should be safer - the TM firewall or XP
SP2 firewall?

Did the problem only occur since you installed SP2? If so, disable the XP firewall and see if it works. That won't cure your problem but at least you will be able to tell what is causing it.

I've got XP Pro at home, running SP2, with the SP2 firewall enabled and Port 5900 opened up for in and out. I've read the FAQ for VNC and

also searched the VNC mailing list recent archives for firewall.

Prior to installing XP SP2 I also had installed Trend Micro's virus
protection and firewall. I've configured it to the best of my
knowledge, and still things don't work when I try to connect to my
home machine. I get an error of "server closed connection
unexpectedly". Any more help on trying to troubleshoot?
