Unless, like me, you still still have use to periodically connect to the Internet via. 
modem, but primary access to the Internet is via broadband and using a router.

Do not turn off the entire firewall!  That's like throwing the baby out with the bath 
water.

John, if you're primary access to the Internet is through a cable modem, and you may 
require to access the Internet though a modem connectiod, just disable the firewall 
for the LAN connection.  Don't disable the entire Windows Firewall.

There are exceptions.  For instance if you ONLY connect to the Internet through a 
router, or use a third-party firewall.

Still, even with the Windows Firewall and the LAN connection disabled, the Windows 
Firewall will still warn you if a program tries to bind to the IP stack as a listening 
service.  A good warning that a program might be tring to act as a server without your 
permission.

Not using some sort of firewall is reckless.
