Absolutely sure as I only downloaded VNC 3 in desperation after all failed with VNC 4. According to Active Ports there is nothing else using port 5900 (and I have disabled the XP remote service). I can connect by WiFi using another PC to the XP machine using VNC 4 which would further imply that port 5900 is not being used by anyone else. Finally, I have hard reset the iPAQ and started from scratch with VNC 4 with no improvement.
