as i said "if you know what you are doing".
if you click and open random attachments, click on ever link that is sent to
you through an instant messenger (quite easy to tell which links are ones
from infected friends, had one the other day. friend sent me a link out of
the blue, i responded back "this is most likely a virus", mins later, yup,
it was, they were trying to clean up), then SURE, you need to run antivirus
all the time.

"if you know what you are doing" you dont.

I know this is not a preach forum, but not running anti-virus of any form is
very short-sided. Viruses come in all forms today. You can get viruses from
websites (that automatically download things), instant messaging, and email.

You do not have to run Norton. There are many kinds of anti-virus programs
out there.

norton and mcaffee both cause problems

i dont run any antivirus software normally. if you are fully aware of what
you are doing, then running it is virtually POINTLESS unless you WANT to
give yourself problems and slow down your computer. if you know what you
are doing, you can avoid the viruses that are out there (dduuuhhhh... i'll
open this attachment!!!), and the new viruses that come out you aren't
protected against ANYWAY until several hundred people GET it and the company
updates and you get the update.

whenever i have a suspicion, the two online virus scanners from trend micro
and symantec are run, which are inhertently the most up to date.
