Guys, Jvrn's instructions are basically wrong, I'm afraid.
For best performance over a slow link, you want to be using ZRLE and 8 colour mode, which are configured by the command-line: Vncviewer -preferredencoding=zrle -lowcolourlevel=0 ... However, VNC Viewer will by default auto-select the best settings for the available bandwidth, so you probably want to just leave it to do its own thing... The fact that you've been forcing VNC Viewer to use Hextile over a 64K link explains why it hurts!
