Guys,
Jvrn's instructions are basically wrong, I'm afraid.
For best performance over a slow link, you want to be using ZRLE and 8 colour mode, which are configured by the command-line:
Vncviewer -preferredencoding=zrle -lowcolourlevel=0 ...
oops. james is of course right. sorry for spreading misinformation.
two errors on my part: a) i looked into the wrong script (the one i use for local administration) b) the viewer i have here is tightvnc, the syntax for realvnc is different.
seems i've been trying to do too many things simultaneously at work today :(
However, VNC Viewer will by default auto-select the best settings for the available bandwidth, so you probably want to just leave it to do its own thing...
the reason i'm not doing this is that i only allow vnc connections from localhost and use an sssh tunnel to get there. this causes the auto-negotiation to switch to maximum quality settings, which is no fun at all over an isdn line.
