since they have dynamic IP's there is not a way for vnc to determine their IP from their name without dns.
This has to do with the IP stack not necessarily vnc. e.g. "ping computername" form your xp box does not work either, I bet. If you are the one assigning dhcp to the clients you could make them static? or use dns registration with your clients (if you run the dns server). Maybe a little more info would be helpful? All on one lan?
