I can see that 192.168.1.21 looks like a DHCP-allocated address, but
actually it isn't. I don't have any DNS server (that I know of!) on this
LAN, so I allocate all IP addresses manually, in order to avoid the kind
of problem you're suggesting. In fact 192.168.1.21 has been in
continuous service for several months now (it's our domestic jukebox).

I can alternate between successfully connecting to 192.168.1.21 using
the "VNC Viewer: Connection Details" dialog box, and failing to connect
to it using the configuration file.

On a hunch that it might turn up something useful, I've tried changing
the host address in the configuration file to various things... to an
unused IP address (192.168.1.123), to the address of a PC that exists
but isn't running the VNC server (192.168.1.18), and to "garbage". They
all produced the same result.

As a matter of interest, is the "Attempting to connect to host..."
message intended to display the identity of the host it's trying to
connect to?
