...and am guessing that was our problem. I restarted vnc (gnome desktop) and it was a mess! I don't know what this guy had done wrong, but I had to delete his .gconf and .gconfd directories and restart VNC to get it working again.
In case it helps - another bit of weirdness is that it made us enter a password when we started VNC. This is strange because it already had a password from our earlier sessions.
