first, if you will be connecting exclusively through a VPN, you are
already within a secure channel.

second, I would say your test was successful. unless you have something
like windows server with terminal services set up and the vnc server
running inside the TS session, connecting to the local host will pretty
much only show you the window upon window things, because that is what
is there to show as it draws itself in a repeating cascade.

(as an amusement, I opened a loopback connection with diosplay scaling
turned on... it keeps getting smaller and smaller...)

I'm having a few problems setting up RealVNC to work on a local network,
strangely 
TightVNC worked immediately but I prefer the security settings on
RealVNC as I am 
looking to eventually connect via a VPN connection.

Is there a way I can test the set up using localhost or 127.0.0.1, I did
try it but just got 
window after window after window appearing, which is understandable.

At the moment I have not got two computers on my adsl/router set up to
test it with.
