Sadly, I didn't find the answer here in this forum, although it took me a few
hours to come to the realization that this forum was my only hope, AND that it
didn't have the answer... at least it wasn't easy to find.
So here is my solution to the following error message:
unable to connect to host: Connection timed out (10060)
I got this error message after trying to connect to a new installation of VNC
server 4.1.1 on my Windows XP Home machine. I was connecting through my home
network from a machine running XP Pro(although I would have had the same issue
with any OS).
It turns out that Windows Firewall was preventing the access. However, Windows
Firewall normally gives a message and a confirm dialog box on the server machine
when it detects a new program that wants to run. However, for some
reason(perhaps because it's a server?) it didn't give the message, so I didn't
know that I needed to look there.
On a whim, I went to the server machine and fired up windows firewall(in Control
Panel) and added to the list of exceptions, the server program(specifically, in
this case: C:\Program Files\RealVNC\VNC4\winvnc4.exe).
It worked like a champ.
