I'm not familiar with how Ubuntu does it, but RedHat has a nice script that
comes with it... Maybe something like this would work for you...
#!/bin/sh
# Red Hat Linux VNC session startup script
exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
The above script (in a file labeled "xstartup") goes in a folder called .vnc
under your home directory. It seems that for whatever reason, your VNC
server is not starting the Gnome window manager. I'm not sure how Gnome is
started, maybe with /usr/bin/gnome-session? Dunno.

Subject: Real VNC server on linux. How to configure acces GDE
Hello!
I am trying to configure realVNC server on a Linux Ubuntu system. At this
moment I can see remotely a window with an terminal session into a grey
bigger screen. I tried to startx in order to be able to remotly load Gnome
(GDE) but no way. Anyone know how I must set up my system in order to be
able to connect to my Linux system in to a Gnome Desktop?
Many thanks.
Jon
