Karen,

The xstartup script is run whenever you start a new VNC desktop with the
vncserver command, and simply lists the set of programs to run in the new
desktop.  There is nothing more to it than that.

If you want to run Gnome rather than the twm window manager, just replace
the "twm" command with the command to start Gnome (which is usually
gnome-session).
