BTW I was using UDP punch-through five or six years ago,
it's a fun technique -- when it works, anyway!

Well, that's a start... but it's not terribly
polished, EchoVNC is windows-specific, and
it seems to always send packets via the relay
instead of going direct when possible (unless
I misunderstand), and (worst of all) the rendezvous
server is not open source and not free to use.

So there's still some room for improvement.
