Two things: 1) I don't know if maybe it's a permissions issue where VNC can't access the font server. 2) *IS* the font server running on the Solaris box?
I'm afraid I don't know much about Solaris, so I can't say for sure, but I think it is similar enough to linux that it's using something similar. You may need to explicitly give VNC access to the font-server.
