Explorer is running already - it's just that it's only
a window.  There is no taskbar, system tray, icons and
apparently no way to see them.  You have to imagine
your machine with just wallpaper and an explorer
window open - that's it!  No tray, start menu, and no
apparent way to get to it.  I do agree it got hosed. 
Sorry to have taken this off topic- All I'm saying is
it was or had to be the vnc install/un-install done in
succession, because it was the last thing I did on the
machine before it went south... thanks for your help,
but I'm obviously going to have to re-build the
machine.
