Sanjay - I have the exact same setup at home, Linksys WRT54G. I never had a problem from Home connecting VNC Viewer to my desk at work with VNC Server. My Home PC is directly connected to one of the 4 Ethernet ports on the WRT54G, VNC works fine. My kids PCs go thru wirelessly (nice tight WPA2 & PSK security), VNC works fine.
Troubleshooting: You didn't say which mode (wireless or direct) at your home you're failing to connect. If your using wireless, try direct Ethernet connect, does that work? Eliminate and narrow down some more problems. Try bypassing the WRT54G entirely and connect directly to your Cable Modem or whatever your using for broadband.
