Do you actually receive an error? If so, what is it?
If not, it sounds more like the "infamous Remote Desktop/Fast User Switching" problem. If the remote box is XP, and they also use RDP or FUS, then VNC will no longer connect. You will be prompted for a password, but it will not succeed.

I am trying to connect to a computer in Tokyo, Japan from a computer in Sweden. I get the logon screen and i also get prompted for the

But it will not connect. Seems like a time out related error.

It is possible to connect to the computer in japan from other locations
in
japan.

It is also possible to connect using remote desktop.

Is there a registry key or something that i can change to get VNC
working on
connections with a transit delay?
