I haven't tried the loadable module, but I'm sure that it would perform better
since it would not require polling in order to figure out which areas to update.

Yes, from what I understand it provides very good performance with less 
resource use than the Xvnc server.

Perhaps you can get away with using the vnc.so from the Free Edition?
