You need to edit /etc/sysconfig/vncserver so that there are a couple of lines like:

VNCSERVERS="2:michael"
VNCSERVERARGS[2]="-geometry 800x600"

Then everything's happy. You can see from the other branch in this thread that I've filed a bug report on the init.d script to stop it from reporting OK when it really FAILED because there are no VNCSERVERS defined.

I'm going to take a serious look at using the XDMCP method described in http://www.linux-mag.com/2003-03/guru_01.html so that I can have the vncserver started by xinetd instead of init.d

Hope this helps

Glad you found the answer. Can you provide more information? What vnc server package? What lines/parameters did you need to uncomment? I found this page (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Use_VNC_to_connect_to_existing_X_Sessions) helped me to get access to my machine but want to understand all the possible ways to use VNC on Linux. And feel free to send it to the VNC list instead of me. That way someone can search on it 100 years from now! :-)

Thanks!

And of course... I found the answer within a minute of sending this off. After a full day of searching.

You need to uncomment the parameters in /etc/sysconfig/vncserver in order for the service to be able to start.

I've seen a fair bit of information on this in the list, but I haven't seen a solution...

I'm trying to get vncserver to run as a service in Fedora Core 4, but when I execute '/etc/init.d/vncserver start', the message comes back 'OK', but when I query the status, it says 'Xvnc is stopped' and there's nothing in the logs.

If I run vncserver as a foreground process from the command line, it seems to work fine, and I can log in...

Has anyone got any idea what's going on, or what I can do to track down the problem?

Michael
