I also thought of that solution when I read this question, but I think that netcat or expect (especially the later) would be easier to use in a script than telnet. Anyway, such a script shouldn't be hard to write. I think any common port scanner (nmap, for example) can be also used in such a way that it will scan port 5900 only.
