Thanyou to the people on this email list. I received 3 apparent solutions to problem of the how to provide remote access with out re configuring the router / adsl modem.
1. http://www.hamachi.cc/ and http://www.realvnc.com/ I tested this and it works great. Just accepted all the defaults on installations. It was deceptively easy. 2. (not tried yet) http://faq.gotomyvnc.com/fom-serve/cache/88.html 3. (not tried yet) reverse port forwarding: computer_behind_FW$ ssh -R$remote_port:localhost:$local_port \ your.linux.box.on.the.internet The you can access computer_behind_FW:$local_port from any computer on the internet by connecting to your.linux.box.on.the.internet:$remote_port SSH-Tools for Windows such as putty can probably also do reverse port forwarding.
