Tom, Make sure you've followed exactly the build instructions for building VNC Free Edition. You'll need to look in the Imakefile for the xc/programs/Xserver/vnc directory to comment out the module, if I remember correctly.
Is there any particular reason why you want to build from source rather than just using the pre-built binaries?
