4. vncconfig is running
5. the xorg.conf file includes the following lines for vnc.so:
Load "vnc" # VNC server hook
        Subsection "vnc"
                Option "Desktop" "Pete's Workstation"

6. various settings of of "CompareFB" "on" vs. "CompareFB" "off",
   Option "deferUpdate" "40" or "0" or "20" or "60" or "100", produced
   no difference.
7. yes, I restart the X server after each such change to xorg.conf.
8. VNC-enhanced X server desktop resolution is 1152 x 864. The rez
of the Windows 2000 desktop on which vncviewer is running is
   1024 x 768.
9. network (LAN) is Ethernet 100Mbps. Access is through the LAN.

More generally, refreshing of the vncviewer window is not complete
in many situations: e.g. if I move a window, the background in the
area that the moved window occupied originally, does not get always
repainted in the vncviewer window.

Complete message (original plus additions) follows:

I am trying RealVNC 4.2.5 for remote administration of Linux boxes.

All our Linux boxes run Fedora 4, and will upgrade to Fedora 5 soon.

This is my problem with RealVNC 4.2.5, when interacting with the
display :0 of a target machine (Fedora 4, with X updated to the
latest release as of today, xorg-x11 v6.8.2 Release: 37.FC4.49.2.1
and all the associated xorg-x11 packages updated to the same level)
when viewed with vncviewer RealVNC 4.2.5 from a Windows 2000 desktop
(also completely up-to-date):

Shell windows (black bg with white or color fonts) are not refreshed
in the vncviewer window, neither when typing from vncviewer nor when
typing locally on the server desktop. If I move the window, kinda
"forcing" the shell window to be redrawn in the vncserver window on
Windows 2000, then I see the typed input. If I move the mouse making
the pointer go over the not-refreshed areas, they get "repainted" and
then I can see them. It does not matter whether I start the shell
window or other application (Netscape, e.g.) from the native desktop
or from the vncviewer client - the results are identical.

Trying gnome-terminal and xterm produce the same result.

The titles of the window do not show initially, until I move the
window (drag it).

Other editable windows or fields, refresh or don't refresh, following
some "rule" that I can't figure out:
 - the address line of a Netscape 7.2 broswer does not refresh
 - the text area of a gVim editing session, refreshes perfectly.

More generally, refreshing of the vncviewer window is not complete
in many situations: e.g. if I move a window, the background in the
area that the moved window occupied originally, does not get always
repainted in the vncviewer window.

It appears to be a vnc.so problem because x0vncserver refreshes alright.
It is far less efficient than the vnc.so module though.

To avoid obvious questions and answers, I will post the following answers
here:
1. I tried the client vncviewer against other RealVNC servers (Linux
vncserver/Xvnc and x0vncserver) and the problem does not show: the
input keystrokes get reflected immediately on the vncviewer window.
2. I tried the client vncviewer against Windows RealVNC servers, and
it works ok. It is not a problem with the Windows vncviewer.
3. Only when the server is a Linux X display, with the vnc.so module
from RealVNC installed and running (I can connect alright, with or
without encryption, with this authentication method and the other,
etc. --> no connection problems) that I find this problem
4. vncconfig is running

                Option "PasswordFile" "/root/.vnc/passwd"
                Option "IdleTimeout" "600"
        EndSubSection

Anybody had this problem? what is the solution?.

Thank you in advance, and many regards.
