Elmer unless you want to install an app for it (like Screen Shot Deluxe)
A simple way is close to what you tried.
Try using Ctrl + Print Screen OR Alt + Print Screen the open Microsoft Paint
and Ctrl + V (to paste the picture into Paint)
You can then save and or edit the picture to your liking.
If you need to paste it into a Word document you can skip the pasting in
Microsoft Paint part and just paste the image in Word.

Hope this helps

I use a product called screen hunter (free version) from wisdom soft
(http://www.wisdom-soft.com/). it's free, and has really useful features
like saving to files in addition to clipboard, and timed capture, which lets
me hide my on-screen keyboard before the screen shot is taken (I have no use
of my arms, and use my eyes and on=screen keyboard to type). I've never had
any trouble with it.
