Michael, VNC server won't prevent an XP system from entering standby or hibernate mode. The only power-saving manipulations it performs are to do with powering up the display hardware when a user connects in.
If you have Wake-on-LAN enabled on the server computer and have configured your router to forward VNC traffic for port 5900 then you may find that people "probing" for VNC servers will cause the machine to keep waking up. This can be avoided by running your VNC server on a different public port.
