Hi Sarah, Since it coincides with an upgrade to the software, and since VNC doesn't hook into applications in an intrusive way, it's extremely unlikely that VNC is causing the problem.
What you may find helps is using VNC Enterprise or Personal Edition with the VNC Mirror Driver (http://www.realvnc.com/products/beta), which will improve update performance.
