I think that using an INI file is an excellent idea that needs to be adopted by all of the versions! Why would you be so against doing it this way? It makes it much easier to deploy remotely. There is no decrease in security (if I can hack my way to the ini file, I can hack my way into the registry just as easy) and it is more inline with the modern way of Windows programming. Even Microsoft has made a sharp turn against using the registry and started using XML to store program preferences.
