Colin,

It sounds most likely that the Windows XP system's Windows Firewall hasn't
been correctly configured to allow connections to the VNC server, whereas
the Windows Vista system has.

Note that many NAT routers don't handle connections between two machines
within the LAN via their public IP address & a forwarded port correctly, so
that's not necessarily a good test.
