I assume besides XP's FW being off, you did add the IP address you are
connecting from to the VNC exception list, correct ?  Should be listed as:

+xx.xx.xx.xx/yy.yy.yy.yy  (IP Address or range/Netmask)
-0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0
