I have a small private network connected to the Internet using a LinkSys Cable router (BEFSR11). I used the port forwarding feature to allow VNC connections from the internet to a few of the Windows 98 workstations running on the network. It works fine by just forwarding ports: 5900 to internal static IP 192.168.1.100 (vnc on display 0) Win98 5901 to internal static IP 192.168.1.101 (vnc on display 1) Win98 However, I can not get the following to respond at all (it dies, not tell me there are no servers, just sits there): 5905 to internal static IP 192.168.1.2 (vnc on display 5) Mandrake 6.2 As additional information, it must be mentioned that no other ports redirected to the Linux server work either. I have tried ports 21 (FTP), 22 (SSH), 23 (TELNET), and 80 (HTTP) with no results. All those ports are accessible from any of the workstations inside the internal network and the Linux server is configured to allow all IPs in without the PARANOID keyword in hosts.allow and hosts.deny. I have read in the list that some suggest it is necessary to forward both ports 58XX and 59XX in order to have VNC to work. I have re-read the VNC documentations and saw no indication it may be necessary to do so. It works fine using the windows VNC server and redirecting only port 59XX. Are there any differences between the implementations of VNC under Linux and Windows that would cause such a problem? Any ideas?
