The version of your X server should not make any difference to vnc
since vnc implements its own X server. So your upgrade to XFree86 4
should do very little, unless you wind up with an X authentication
problem. I don't know how to solve those, much less what causes
them.

QT is a widget set, which means that it sits on top of X.
Technically, it communicates to your X server through the X protocol,
so it will not even notice that it's not running on the physical
terminal. KDE sits even higher. I absolutely love modular
structure.

Anti-aliasing is a process in which an image will have areas that are
"blurred" in order to decrease the sharpness of a change. Actually,
the process is more like averaging the color values of two locations
and picking something in between so that it is possible to trick eyes
into thinking that they're viewing a continuous object even though
it's being displayed on a descrete array. This is important in
making text look better.

Look up anti-aliasing for more information. Most graphics texts
should be able to tell you about it, but I'd also look at the gimp
home page to see if anyone has posted anything there.
