Reflections On Guatemala:

   Some reflections:

   1. Guatemalans are very concerned about the future of freedom in
Central America. While we tend to think that things are basically
going fine, many of the countries in Central America are starting to
turn back to Socialism. Great concerns in Guatemala.

   2. The most recently issued license plates on cars in Guatemala are
made of paper. I am told that President Portillo awarded the
license-plate manufacturing contract in return for a bribe, and he and
the contractor split the loot. Now they have no license plates and no
money to make them. So they have paper license plates covered in
   plastic (it is really bizarre).

   3. Guatemala's airport is nicer then Miami's. Which really an
observation on what a pit Miami's airport is.

   4. Francisco Marroquin has the most beautiful university campus I have
ever seen, carved out of a nature preserve in the middle of Guatemala
   City. Absolutely gorgeous.
