Hello,

a typical 3458A has a T.C. around +/- 0.2 ppm/K.
For highest stability I would keep the temperature 23 deg C +/- less than 1 K. And keep the fan filter clean so that the internal temperature does not rise.

But in this case you should also control humidity.
With epoxy packaged voltage references I have seen 0.5 ppm / %rH output voltage change. Any epoxy PCB used within a instrument should have a similar effect on components soldered to the PCB.

with best regards
Andreas

I know before I ask this question that “it depends” will be part of any
answer. However, I will ask it anyway.

How stable does a lab temperature need to be maintained, in order to
warrant using an 8.5 digit multimeter such as a 3458A? The same question
for 6.5 and 7.5 digit meters.

Dave.
