A couple weeks ago I reported an error that persisted among my dialup and
remote customers:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]',
Server: 'pop.iowalink.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I got a response here about how Norton was a likely cause.

I have found the following:

1) not all experiencing the problem are using Norton
2) this ONLY happens with remote connections, not on our lan
3) if I put a POP Proxy in between the remote customer and the mail server,
it works ok - ie no errors - when you get mail via the proxy.

This morning I changed the motherboard, memory and network cards on the
server and the problem persists.

If the router were the issue, using a proxy would not make a difference...
but it does.
If the net cards were the issue, then using a proxy would not make a
difference .... but it does.

Somehow a local connection works fine but a remote one doesn't (I don't need
to use the pop proxy on the local network, it works fine for me here in the
office and it always has, it is my remote customers with problems.)

Somehow it appears to me that the OS itself prefers the local connections
and not the remote ones.

This has become a real problem and customers have left me. Is a new OS and
new install of VOPMail the only way to go? (you can imagine my concerns... I
have 2000 boxes, some via radius, some via database, some via registry. Some
lists via registry, some via database, some via text. 85 or so domains. 7 IP
addresses on the box. Several ODBC links, etc.

Ideas?
