Much of the energy in the rad waste is lost in the form of alpha particles, and
these have a very short range in solid matter.

One solution might be a "dusty plasma". I was surprised to find that Wiki actually has an entry on this.

IOW convert the solid radwaste to a fine dust particulate - so that even alpha particles escape and create lots of ions.

In a magnetic field, the charged polarities could be separated - just as in other MHD devices. Of course, this would demand extreme measures to insure that no leaks occur.

That cave in Nevada has already been dug, and would be a good place for the plant to be sited.
