I've been working on some simple animations of my own. Pick the link and scroll down to page 11. The traveling wave is a _javascript_ animation. If you go to view source you can see the script that does this. By changing the x and the y coordinates of the implication and the image a lot can be done with versions of this script.
The traveling wave is a marquee. It's a very simple way to produce movement on a page.
