Suppose you had a car with the performance of a Prius, but that the
engine/generator/fuel tank was an easily removeable module, so that an
auxiliary battery pack would sit in the module slot when the engine module
was not in there.

For normal short haul trips you would go all electric.  For long trips you
would swap out the aux/bat for the eng/gen/f-t.

Aside from some engineering challenges and the inconvenience of making the
swap, there are numerous advantages to this arrangement.  Jed, I'm sure you
can elaborate on those advantages more expertly than I.  I would like to
hear your thoughts on the matter.
