Why "strangely enough"? Gliding was essential to the progress of aviation.

Also in 1911, in the U.S., Cal Rogers flew the "Vin Fiz" (soft drink)
airplane from New York to California . . . in one month. In short hops,
including so many crashes that there was practically nothing left of the
original machine by the time it arrived. He was killed a few months later
in an air crash.
