It has been making the rounds that North Korean Defence Minister, Hyon
Yong-chol, was purged and publicly executed by anti-aircraft gunfire. BBC
news wrote a reasonably objective analysis of the matter. At present it is
difficult to verify the accuracy of the claimed specifics:

Assuming the latest purge is accurate.

It would suggest that Kim's inexperience of leadership skills has resulted
in him becoming terrified of anyone he perceives to be a potential alpha
male, a rival within the bureaucracy he inherited from his farther. What I
see are the actions of someone who believes instilling abject fear within
the ruling party is the ticket to keeping himself safe from being bumped
off. I suspect he is dead wrong on that. I cannot imagine the remaining
survivalist oriented, savvy, well-entrenched old guard that is decades older
than their 32 year old leader being willing to put up with such antics for
much longer. Orchestrating public executions of this kind is highly
disruptive to maintaining a sense stability and standard of living. Seems
very likely to me that there are interesting off-the-records discussions
occurring in obscure undisclosed quarters in the middle of the night. It's
imperative to discover who remain fanatically loyal to Kim and who are
waffling.

It would not surprise me to hear of additional changes in upper management
in the near future.
