More to the point, it might be possible to think of alpha decay and alpha capture as being opposite directions of the same process. So if there's something that catalyzes the "leaking" of an alpha particle out of heavier nuclides, the same thing might enhance the ability of lighter nuclides to capture them if it would be energetically favorable.
