If what is needed is a field that is not spherical, that is also an interesting idea. Perhaps hydrogen and deuterium accomplish this, e.g., as in this photo, which shows charge density diagrams with 0, 1, and 2 hydrogen atoms in the middle of a palladium lattice: http://i.imgur.com/3uKjFpi.png The electron charge density for electrons orbiting the hydrogen atoms at the center of the images are suggested by the Tsyganov and others to be forced into a p-orbital, although I don't know how likely this is. In this case, the electron orbitals pass by the sides of the palladium atoms, creating a non-uniform charge distribution. Eric
